This year, I admittedly fell into a type of seasonal depression. Not just the kind that comes from snow flurries and grey skies, but one with movie theater violence, Sandy Hook catastrophes and a new, eerie perspective of pressure cookers.
From October to April, along with the rest of the country, I wallowed in grief. I didn’t know how to go about thinking differently about the world we live in or how to brighten my mood. I remember doubting how I could return to a positive perspective when so much bad had happened?
I knew that I wanted to change my outlook on life, but I didn’t know how. I needed a reminder of the good in the world, but I didn’t exactly know where to look. And – yes, there is a lot of good out there – I see people living it every day. But, what was going to inspire me to take action about making a difference in my life and my community? I didn’t know.
Last week, this video went viral. I’m sure most of you have seen it and gathered your own inspiration and opinions about it. His family is truly a blessing in this world.
This led me to start thinking, however, that so am I. I am a blessing; I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives. And, so are plenty of other people out there. There are those who silently devote hours and days of their lives to making things better and the few of us who always want to, but don’t know how.
Well, I want to start doing something about it.
For the past two years, I participated in a 31 Days series in the month of October with many other writers across the country. For each day in October, each blogger writes a post around a central theme. You can read my past years’ series here and here.
The onset of the summer months and brighter days led me to start thinking about what I wanted to write about this year. Thankfully, my seasonal depression and Zach’s video easily led me to the answer.
In the month of October, I’m going to perform 31 Random Acts of Kindness.
Doing this alone would be entirely too easy, though. This is why I’m writing about it in May.
I want you to join me.
You can fill out the form below and tell me that you’re interested in learning more (I will offer emails of suggestions for Random Acts and check-ins leading up to the 31 Days). Or, write about it on your blog and inspire others to join in!
Feel free to comment on this post below…
or tell me in person.
Or, just silently nod along knowing that you’re joining us even if you never say the words out loud.
Either way, if I can get even one person to join in on these efforts, we will double our impact on the world. Most importantly, I want to share our stories of spreading the good… even if it’s as simple as a hello to a stranger on the street. These are the stories that are worth sharing.
*Are you in?
**Ps. If someone is super talented and wants to make a button for this effort, I would truly love you!
